Flying to Dominica
Easier than it used to be. There are now two nonstop flights from the United States into Douglas–Charles (DOM) — Miami on American and New York / Newark on United. No island-hopping required.
Two nonstops, two coasts covered
American opened the first direct US route to Dominica in December 2021. United added the second from Newark. Between them, most of the country is one flight away.
The route most of our guests use. Roughly 3 hours 35 minutes gate to gate, with morning departures out of Miami. Economy and business, on an Embraer 175 or an A319.
Wednesdays and Saturdays, roughly 4 hours 30 minutes nonstop, with business class available. Seasonal — it runs October to April, which covers most of our season.
What most guests actually do
The flight times make the answer fairly simple.
- Flying out
- The Miami flight leaves in the morning, so almost everybody overnights in Miami the night before rather than trying to connect on the day. It takes the stress out of a missed connection costing you a sea day.
- Flying home
- The return lands back in Miami in the late afternoon, which is too late for most onward connections. Most guests overnight in Miami again before travelling on.
- From Newark
- With only two departures a week, the Newark route shapes your dates — it works best if your trip starts or ends on a Wednesday or a Saturday.
- Extending your stay
- Most guests add a few days either side of the swim trip to enjoy the island on land — waterfall hikes, the hot springs of the Roseau Valley, rainforest trails and the diving off the hotel dock. Tell us when you book and we can build the extra nights in.

Douglas–Charles sits on the north-east side of Dominica. Fort Young, where you stay, is in Roseau on the west coast — the sheltered, leeward side, which is also the side the whales live on.
The drive takes you right across the island and through the rainforest interior, which is a reasonable introduction to why Dominica is called the Nature Island.

The single most common mix-up, and an expensive one to make at the booking screen. Two different countries, 975 km apart. Dominica is a small volcanic island in the Lesser Antilles between Guadeloupe and Martinique; the airport code you want is DOM.
